Fire Safety
Fire safety in the workplace (and all non-domestic premises) has become a prominent issue in the past ten years. Particular attention has been focused on ensuring that responsibility for fire safety is delegated, fire safety plans are put into place, and execution of these plans is tried, tested and successful when necessary. All of these requirements are outlined in The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO).
Briefly summarised, the RRO states that the responsible person(s) must ensure that a fire risk assessment of any non-domestic premise is undertaken (and reviewed regularly). They must then inform staff (or their representatives) of any risks that have been identified and make them aware of the appropriate safety measures that have been put into place. Subsequently, a plan for emergencies should be created with appropriate resources and training provided to any relevant personnel affected by it – this includes nominated Fire Marshalls and staff that occupy the building who will need to evacuate. Failure to complete these requirements carries minimal monetary fines, and major offences can even lead to prison for those found responsible.
The introduction of the RRO has enforced the need for a responsible person to manage fire safety within workplaces and premises. As a result, it has highlighted an importance for qualified and competent fire risk surveyors to be called upon to carry out these risk assessments and recommend procedures that will ensure legal compliance. Fire Risk Assessors

Fire-Rated Partition Systems

Fire-Rated Duct Protection
Air and gas ducting (for various purposes) are prominent in most building design (particularly those of an industrial nature), and with the ever-increasing importance being placed on energy efficiency the need for appropriate duct insulation has become imperative. By installing a suitable fire-rated duct protection system, clients receive a threefold benefit from one single application. Firstly, the ducts are protected from inevitable temperature loss (both hot and cold) across their length. Secondly, the encasement provides excellent acoustic insulation, which can be a welcoming feature when ductwork passes from plant rooms through occupied areas. And finally, the ducts themselves are protected against attack from fire up to two hours. This is essential to prevent the spread of fire through the duct system and, potentially, throughout the entire building.
